I have the dream of owning my own freelance design business. I currently don’t have a sustainable income with only my freelance work, but that is what I’d like to build up to in the future. With a full-time job and other commitments throughout my day, I find myself with only a few hours every night and some time here and there on the weekends to contribute to my freelance dream.
I’m sure many of you can relate to this same scenario. You would love to pursue your own business or have a hobby you’d like to turn into a career, but you also are working full-time and aren’t at a point where you can support yourself or your family solely from your new adventure, yet. I hear ya! You feel stuck! It seems impossible to make any sort of progress!
When I was feeling stuck, I began to ask myself, how can I make steps towards my goal without leaving my job cold turkey and focusing only on my freelance?! I decided my best option was to bite off small chunks at a time. I would do at least one thing towards my goal everyday, if not a couple more. My daily task could be as small as listening to a design podcast, checking in with a previous client, or reading an article on how to submit a well written proposal. At the end of each day, I wanted to be able to list off a few things I did that day to get me closer to a full-time freelancer. A successful business isn’t created in one day anyways, so if I could be consistent in my efforts I knew I would find success.
Do you have a dream or a goal that seems unreachable? Try doing a couple things each day to get you closer to your goal. If we compare this idea to your health, you aren’t going to get stronger or see results from a diet change in one day. It takes consistent action over long periods of time to see results. Before you know it, those small changes in your daily routine lead to large accomplishments.
So far, I’ve found great success with this method! I’ve been working with amazing clients and slowly adding new projects and experiences to my portfolio. I can’t wait to see where my adventures take me!
