I recently worked with Andee to create her Speech Mom and Bloom Box logos. It didn’t take but a few seconds to notice her drive and excitement towards helping families with language development, during our initial conversation.
Throughout the last couple months, she has become a true inspiration to me! Stepping out of the 9 to 5 world to pursue entrepreneurship is no easy move, but she has taken on the challenge in order to pursue her passion.
I can only hope to continue to work with clients, like Andee, who motivate me to strive only for the things I love. Her story is a true testament to “If you feel purpose in what you’re doing, nothing can stop you from being a success.”
I had a chance to learn a little bit more about her journey in becoming The Speech Mom. I hope you find her as inspiring as I do!
Why did you decide to start The Speech Mom?
I thought I was the most amazing therapist in the world...I thought I knew everything about every kid. Like seriously everything. And then I had my own kids and realized I knew NOTHING! And even worse, I realized there were very few realistic resources for me to tap into as a mom.
I was having a meltdown moment with my first born about feeding him and told my husband we should call a specialist, and he gently reminded me that I would be calling myself. It was kind of an "aha" moment for me. I realized if I was panicking about my child's development, I can't imagine how moms that do not have the tools I do feel. So The Speech Mom was born...to educate, guide, and NEVER judge.
What do you enjoy most about being The Speech Mom?
This is an easy one. The people. I have been so fortunate to meet only awesome people on this journey. Kind, passionate, and fantastic kids and parents. I love the support parents are able to offer each other! I often meet a new mom and hear her fear and worries about her child with a specific medical diagnosis and I am able to introduce her to a parent who has gone through the same thing or is currently. It is really beautiful to watch families take time out of their busy lives to offer strangers support. And it is even more beautiful to watch those strangers (and their kids) become friends. I personally have met a lot of people in this journey and confidently call them all friends.
What advice would you give others wanting to start doing what they love?
It is scary, but worth it. No matter what it is, if you love what you do, you can call yourself successful. As I hesitantly decided to start The Speech Mom and Bloom Box, my husband told me "Stick to what you know, because you love it. If you love what you know, and make a business out of it, you will be fine." I think this is great advice for anyone starting a new business. If you are starting a business in a field you aren't well versed in, it won't work. If you are starting a business you aren't super passionate about, it won't work. Start a business about something you know and love and it will work out.
Tell me a little more about your Bloom Boxes and how they help children and families.
Have you ever had that moment where you think "How did I accumulate all this junk?" Yes? Well, that is how Bloom Box started. I was playing with my kiddos and looked around to realize we had so many toys that no one plays with anymore. And they were all awesome toys! The kind I put way too much thought into. Because I do not purchase a toy unless it is going to enhance my child's development. And then I thought, I wish I could just rent awesome developmentally enhancing toys for my kids...and wouldn't it be cool if a specialist told me exactly how to play with the toys with my children for them to learn basic concepts and new motor skills....and maybe they could be themed, so that month we could just learn all about butterflies or vegetables....that would be amazing! And Bloom Box was born.
What does the future of The Speech Mom look like? What are your dreams/vision?
I am trying really, really hard not to let my dreams get too big! When I started the Bloom Box I thought it would be something that maybe 3 or 4 people would rent a month, and just a few months into this I have 12 currently rented. My goal is to just keep growing and learning. If next month I rent out one more...well then I call it a win!
